How to Build a List of Email Subscribers - The Basics

How to build a list of email subscribers is a question often asked by marketers relatively new to internet marketing who have heard on the grapevine that "the money is in the list" whilst this is absolutely the case, starting out to build a list can seem like a very daunting task without the correct information.
In my opinion, building a responsive list of subscribers should be the number 1 goal of any successful marketer. This article will cover the basic starting point and will highlight what is required to get your list building under-way. Once this has been digested and the basic framework put in place, traffic strategies and advanced tactics can be implemented as part of your business development.
Create a theme or niche
Pretty self explanatory but having a clear idea of what you want to market and your target market is extremely important. Once you are comfortable with your target market, keyword research is vital to identify 10- 12 long tail keyword phrases to be used once you have set up the basic list building systems. Ideally these keywords should have no more than 100,000 competing pages in "exact match" in the Google search results and by enclosing the keyword phrase in quotes "keyword" Google will display the number of competing pages for that exact phrase. This is important to undertake now to ensure the niche is able to provide keyword terms that can get ranked once you have set up the basics here.
Providing a free product or service ( the bribe or bait )
To get a visitor to provide you will details of their name and email address you will have to offer a "bribe" or incentive for them to take action. A free report on the niche market in question or a valuable PLR gift or software download will be required and this must be theme related, for example, providing a free "how to get six pack abs" may be of little interest to someone looking for "dog training" information.
Auto responder
This is the system that provides your subscriber with a series of follow up emails once your visitor has opted in to join your list. Take time to carefully research the different options available to you now rather than further down the line because changing autoresponders can be very difficult so chose wisely from the outset.
Squeeze page
This is the page where you put your opt in form to enable the visitor to subscribe for your offer. Squeeze pages now increasingly have video opt ins and the quality and strength of message will determine your success, a poor squeeze page can get next to no new subscribers whereas a strong page can get as much as 60 - 70% success.
Follow up email series
You now have your subscriber opted in to receive your information. It is vitally important that you only ever provide genuine information or advice and build up trust and respect before you ever try to sell anything. My own philosophy is to over deliver where ever possible and as you become more experienced you will get PLR gifts you can pass on to your list for free and this is a great way to build trust and your own brand. Some marketers work on the law of averages and bombard the list with endless emails recommending every thing possible, this may work for some but in my opinion becoming an expert in your field and helping others with your knowledge and advice is a far more satisfying way to make a living and if followed, one that can build a sustainable business.
